What Is The Best Size Sink For A Gooseneck Faucet
A gooseneck faucet can be configured to fit most sink styles regardless of mounting or basin. Whether or not you can swap your current faucet with this trendy design style has more to do with your existing faucet and sink configuration - but more on that later. Let’s start by determining your current sink style.
Current Mounting and Basin Styles for Kitchen Sinks
Undermount sinks: Fit under the countertop, attached by clips.
Top mount or drop-in sinks: Have a rim and are installed into a hole cut into the countertop.
Farmhouse sinks: AKA apron front, are mounted just below the countertop and exposed in the front. They are typically a large, deep sink style.
Basin options: include single bowl, double bowl, or low divider double bowl.
Once you’ve determined your current sink style, it’s time to consider faucet arc. Gooseneck faucets with dramatic tall arcs (distance from top of sink to base of the spout), while striking, will likely require a deeper sink to avoid unwanted splashback. If your sink is on the shallow side opt for a low-profile model instead.
Finding the Right Size Faucet for Your Existing Sink
If you’re ready to elevate your kitchen space with a stylish gooseneck faucet, then you'll need to know a few things about your current sink and faucet configuration.
Step 1: If you're replacing an existing faucet look at its current set up and measure the overall height, spout height, and spout reach. Aim for a replacement that has similar measurements.
Step 2: Will your new faucet selection be compatible with your existing sink? Determine how many mounting holes are available. If there is a plate in place look under the sink. Kitchen faucet models typically require anywhere from one to five holes, but some can be adapted by using a deck plate.
Step 3: For configurations with more than one hole, measure the distance between the center of the far-left hole to the center of the far-right hole. It’s important to make sure this measurement is no less than the "Minimum Faucet Centers" which you can find listed in your new faucet's specs.
Step 4: If your faucet is in front of a wall, measure the distance from the center of each mounting hole to the wall to find the max faucet base depth. If you have windows or cabinets above your sink, measure upward from the center mounting hole to find the max overall height. To find the ideal spout reach, measure from the center mounting hole forward to the center of your sink. This will make sure that if your holes are further beyond the sink edge, it will still reach the middle of the sink.
How To Install Gooseneck Faucets
Now that you’ve determined which gooseneck faucet is compatible with your current sink, it’s time for the best part - DIY installation! Installing your faucet should only require a few tools (depending on the model selected) and can be done easily without worry or hassle. This installation procedure should be similar for most models with a single handle and pull down sprayer. These instructions are intended to give you a general guideline for your installation, BUT it’s important to always read the faucet instructions first and consult a licensed professional if at any point you’re not comfortable doing the install.
what you’ll need
Channel-lock pliers
Basin wrench
New single-handle faucet (buy separate flexible supply tubes if pre-attached supply tubes not included).
3/8-inch to 1/2-inch compression adapters (If shutoff valves under the sink are 1/2-inch instead of 3/8-inch, connect the supply lines with 3/8-to-1/2-inch compression adapters).
instructions
Step 1: Disconnect Water Supply
Shut off water to the old faucet by closing hot and cold valves under the sink. Turn the shutoff valve handles clockwise until they stop. Turn on faucet to check and make sure water is off. Disconnect faucet's flexible supply tubes from the valves with channel-lock pliers. Hold the valve body in place with one pair of pliers, and loosen the compression nut on the supply tube with the other pliers.
Step 2: Remove Old Faucet
Remove the old faucet by loosening mounting nut(s) that secure faucet underneath sink. A basin wrench will help access tight spaces, but you can also use channel-lock pliers. Next, unthread and pull faucet up from the top of the sink. For attached sprayers, disconnect nut holding sprayer hose to the faucet and mounting nut holding sprayer tailpiece to the sink. Once removed, clean top deck of the sink including the base of the faucet.
Step 3: Install New Faucet
Install the deck gasket onto the new faucet by fitting it over the flexible supply lines, sliding it up into the faucet body. Feed tubes through hole in the sink deck and center faucet body over the hole. Position faucet and make sure it fits before securing it.
Tip: If you are using an optional deck plate cover for unused sink holes, position the spacer and plate onto sink before installing faucet body.
Step 4: Secure Faucet
Place support plate into position on underside of the sink, over supply tubes and threaded tailpiece of faucet body, up against bottom side of the sink. Place round plate under rectangular plate, then thread brass mounting nut onto the faucet tailpiece. Use the installation tool that comes with the faucet to tighten mounting nut. Check faucet position before completely tightening.
Step 5: Install Sprayer Hose
Screw spray hose housing nut onto end of faucet tailpiece, screw spray hose to faucet spray wand to attach. Feed opposite end of spray hose into faucet spout until it comes out under the sink. Remove white cap from the end of spray hose. Connect the spray hose to body of faucet by pushing hose into position (use the white clip to hold in place). Attach weight onto the spray hose, positioning near white tape on the hose. Should move up and down easily with the spray hose.
Step 6: Connect Water Supply Tubes
Connect hot and cold faucet tubes to hot and cold valves using compression fittings. Thread compression nut for each line onto corresponding shutoff valve and tighten nut with pliers - one to hold the valve body and one to tighten the nut. Open shutoff valves, turning counterclockwise to turn water back. Check to make sure faucet and sprayer are working properly and that there are no visible leaks.
